A thumb ring is usually worn by lesbians. My husband has an aunt that is. Her and her partner wear thumb rings to represent this.

A thumb ring is a piece of jewellery designed to protect the thumb during Archery. This is a ring of horn, wood, ivory, metal, plastic, glass or stone which fits over the end of the thumb, coming to rest at the outer edge of the outer joint. A flat area extends from the ring to protect the pad of the thumb from the bowstring.
When drawing a bow using an Asiatic grip, the thumb is hooked around the bowstring just beneath the arrow and braced with the first finger. The bowstring rests against the inner pad of the archer's thumb. To protect the thumb, archers wear a thumb ring. The bowstring rests against the flat of the ring when the bow is drawn. This technique is often referred to as the "Mongolian Release" or the "Mongolian Draw". Today, thumb rings are used by archers practicing styles from Asia and some regions of northern Africa.
For those of you who don't know thumb rings are rings worn on the thumb rather than any of the other four fingers. Thumb rings can and are worn by both men and women. The thumb is associated with a person's strength of will both for themselves and how strongly they affect others.
Esoterically the practice of wearing a thumb ring means you're either trying to emphasis your independence and individuality or inhibiting some aspect of the self. I guess its whatever you feel like or you may be doing both.
Historically, (ie, the 1500's) wearing a thumb ring meant you were a doctor or pretending to be one. Also, centuries ago women would wear their husbands wedding rings on their thumbs when they left for battle or died.
Currently thumb rings are sold everywhere from gumball machines to upscale jewelry manufacturers. They can be made of plastic or platinum and made in a simple band or elaborate framing with braiding, or shapes like hearts inside.
