I had to do a report in college, and this is the simplest answer I can give....

Advantage: it can be a great tool to get info to a group of people

Disadvantage: If your not careful, you can loose the focus of the group, having a negative impact on your presentation.

I use power point a lot and I have been interested to see more and more the expression '"death by powerpoint" being used.

It is a good program but I find in the community that people get tired of it as it is overused. One criticism is that it basically standardizes presentations. One science boffin wrote that it prevented some innovative presentations he liked to do as he was constrained by the program.

Another problem is that people simply present and talk what is on powerpoint thus often causing great boredom in the audience. Thus if using powerpoint use it creatively and try to break the 'presentation mold'

The upside of PP is that it allows a good presentation to be put together with relative ease.

Advantages:
- It's easy and intuitive to use
- There are many tools you can use

Disadvantages:
- You can save in only few formats (I suggest you .pps)
- The file format you create with PPoint is not compatible with many similar softwares

I suggest you to use PowerPoint only if you have to create a presentation.

PowerPoint is a slideshow software
i dont thing there are any disadvantages for using it, it is a powerfull software, and user-friendly, any1 can use it, no need for a programming background
and most of all, u can have fun using it :)
