General Knowledge told Major Duh that 80% of
body heat is lost from the shoulders up. So,
will you risk getting or catching a cold by not
putting on a toboggan when it is
cold out, because you don't want
to mess up your hair? I'm interested in answers
from the UK, or anywhere else.

You're at more risk for a cold when your *core* temperature drops. See http://www.cnn.com/2005/HEALTH/11/14/cold.chill/index.html

And yes, a lot of heat is lost through the head. I'm a full-time barefooter, even in snow, used to be cold all the time but since I learned more about how our body works and how it keeps itself warm, I can go barefoot in the snow, wear warm clothes on my upper body, a hat and a shawl, and still feel warm (body and feet)... while I used to wear thick socks and warm boots but no hat and shawl and I'd get cold very soon after going outside.

Heat loss through the head is one of those Well Known Facts, but it's true. I have trouble losing heat in Summer if I wear a hat. In the winter here (no snow - ever) I put on a woollen hat and it does make a difference, even if I'm in shorts and a short - sleeved shirt.

Honey, I have never been afraid of getting my hair messed up. A cold is the very least risk anyone should be concerned with when going out. How about violent crimes? Now "THAT" is everyones greatest risk

If I am dressed up for a special night out, I will not wear a toque or a hat.
Besides there is no evidence that being exposed to cold will make you catch a cold.

Sure, because you have a risk of getting hypoglycemia over a cold. You need to have a virus in order to get a cold when it's cold.

i imagine you've a fairly strong excuse to stay in. in case you want to do something knock out some crunches or push ups, that receives you sweating in simple terms as a lot. do not experience undesirable about staying in. You had to stroll to be healthful in the first position... so if its going to make you sicker isn't that a touch counter valuable? :)
