The movie Adrift is based on true events...does anyone know what event that was, or where I could find out some info on it. The movie has intrigued and frustrated me...it has also been known as Godspeed and Open Water 2 in some countries.

Thank-you for your answers guys...I am actually referring to the 2nd movie where 6 people jump off the deck of a yacht but forget to put the ladder down first.

The original Open Water is based on Tom and Eileen Lonergan who were left behind by a group dive boat in 1998.
Open Water 2 however is most likely not based on any real events. Many films used the line "based on a true story" as part of their promotional campaign, either in situations that have elements in fact (such as The Amityville Horror, based on real people, but it was a hoax that is described in the film as a true happening), films very loosely based on a real happening (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is inspired by Ed Gein, but is in no way based on the true story of Gein) or outright lies (Fargo starts with "based on a true story" but this is not the case).

The technique is called "false documenting" and is generally used as a scare tactic in horror films, It seems to be used as a way to bring in an unlikely scenario, using the idea that "truth is stranger than fiction"

Open Water 2 True Story

Actually, it was based on the story of two American divers who went diving in The Great Barrier Reef in Australia sometime in the late 90s, about 1998ish if i remember correctly.
They were accidently left behind at the end of the day, whe the dive boat left to go back to shore, although there were conspiracies that they'd faked their own death and stuff like that. I'm pretty sure there would be loads of info on it on the net. I'm an Aussie and it was pretty big news when it happened because it's not really something that happens everyday.

Open water was not based on a single event but was based on the fact that a few divers from time to time get left behind.
