Let's first define "Transformational leaders". They are those who offer a purpose that transcends short-term goals and focus on higher order intrinsic needs.
For leaders to become transformational leaders, they should first have:
1. Charisma or Idealized influence: they should behave in admirable ways that cause followers to identify with them; display convictions, take stands and appeal to followers on an emotional level.
2. Inspirational motivation: they should articulate a vision that is appealing and inspiring to followers. Leaders with inspirational motivation challenge followers with high standards, communicate optimism about future goal attainment and provide meaning for the task at hand.
3. Intellectual stimulation: they should challenge assumptions, take risks and solicit followers' ideas. Leaders with this trait stimulate and encourage creativity in their followers.
4. Individualized consideration or Individualized attention: they should listen and attend to followers' needs, act as mentors to them.

There are a few things that come to mind when discussing leaders in Mauritius. There are things that hinder good leadership in the country.
1. In Mauritius, leaders are often chosen based on their race, religion or family status. Leaders should be chosen based on their abilities, integrity, ethics, honesty, capacity to do the job and education among other things.
2. Corruption and dishonest and illegal practices in the government, military and police force needs to be punished by removal from the position or job. A country can not advance as a world respected nation if their leaders cannot be trusted.
3. A much stronger emphasis on 'higher education" must be promoted to the young generation. Higher education for more Mauritians means more possibilites and more qualified leaders. The University of Mauritius needs to be overflowing and ever expanding. Many Mauritian families put a lot of emphasis on finding a suitable marriage partner for their youth and don't even seem to be the least concerned if their older children have a good education. Good leaders cannot be developed without a good world-recognized education.
In the very large population of Mauritian young people, how many have a university or college education or are working on one. A small percentage in fact. Not enough!
Mauritians have charisma which is important only to a small degree. Charisma does not make a good leader, a respected leader or a qualified leader. It does not make a "transformational leader".

I do think Mauritians should love their country more, a leader aiming at this would be a big step forward... don't you think?
