The most famous colleges in Canada, to people from outside Canada, are:

-McGill University
-University of Toronto
-University of Waterloo (to people in engineering)

In the US, the most famous to people outside the US are:

-Harvard University
-Massachusetts Institute of Technology
-University of California, Berkeley
-Stanford University
-Boston University
-Dartmouth
-Brown University
-Yale University
-Columbia
-New York University
-University of Illinois Urbana Champaign (engineering and science specifically)
-Princeton University
-University of Southern California
-University of California, Los Angeles

In general, many of my husband's students from overseas have told him that schools in the US are more widely recognised in their countries than schools in any other English speaking country.
