We have both a voluntary nervous system (for deliberate bodily actions), and an involuntary nervous system (which operates wihtout conscious control). The involuntary system is subdivided into two parts: sympathetic and parasympathetic. The sympathetic system is stimulating, and energizes the system. The parasympathetic is relaxing. During sleep, it is the parasympathetic system that is predominant, which causes bodily blood vessels to dilate (expand).
This expansion of blood vessels operates to produce the nightime erections. Males have several ( about 5) of these each night, corresponding to the REM (dream sleep) period. The last such period is at the time of waking up.
