a. though we were trying to support both sides at first. Wilson was scared of alienating the population as America had many German,Italian and Irish immigrants at the time. The thing that finally made the US lean more towards the Allies was the sinking of the Lusitania by the Germans and the fact the British had a blockade in effect so we could no longer help the Central powers.
