If usb is your only connection coming out of the modem then you need to get a different modem. Check your modems documentation many modems offer usb or ethernet connectivity. Your router requires an ethernet connection to the modem.

the usb cable you are talking about goes from your cable/dsl modem to your PC. You need to have a Network card inside of your PC that will take a cat5 cable.

What happens is you power down your modem. Connect a cat5 cable from the modem to the belkin router's internet port, and then another cable from port 1,2,3, or 4 to the network card in your PC.

Power up the modem...wait 30 seconds for it to completely boot up. Power up the router. wait 30 seconds and then boot up the PC. You should be up and running.

If you don't have a network card, then you need to get on thats internal, or a USB network card. But you will need the cat5 cables.

If your modem doesn't have an RJ-45 network interface on it, you'll have to replace the modem with one that does. Many low-end broadband connections use a USB-only modem and you can't use a router with them.
