Actually, for a country of its size, India's share of the world's tourism industry is extremely poor.
There has always been an elitist cultural interest in her arts and traditions, and it's a very cheap destination for travellers wanting to escape the rigours of Western winters - so the numbers of tourists is bound to increase by leaps and bounds as the infrastructure improves.

It has variety. There's the history and rich heritage - Taj Mahal, all the monuments of the Moghuls, the architecture in temples in the south and their stories. There are the big cities Delhi and Mumbai. There's Goa and there's Chennai with beautiful beaches. Kerala's backwaters are wonderful. There are the hill stations, Darjeeling, Simla, the lakes and mountains in Jammu and Kashmir. The desert in Rajasthan.. and so much more.

In fact India gets a fraction of what even Thailand gets !.
Of late there has been a rise in tourists but we far short of our potential.
Major attractions continue to be yoga,ayurveda, cheap beaches, and variety /colour.

The number one reason is the Taj Majal. The others are it is a beatiful country, with many cities and sites to see of historical significance. It is far away and different, and the people are friendly.
They have a good transportation system so it is relatively easy to get form place to place once you are there.

Coz India has a colorful culture,beautiful sights , one of the world's wonder ( the Taj Mahal ), rather interesting things to buy / shop.Well,least thats wot brought me to India to visit. :)
