I use a FAL sweetitch rug on my 17hand warmblood as he is really sensitive to fly bites & he reacts badly to them. Bring your horse in during the day & turn out at night to minimise exposure to biting insects whenever possible, try a wide range of fly sprays to see which is most effective on your horse with the type of flies in your area & if the horse has any open cuts at all it is always best to ensure they are covered by a veterinary cream to act as a barrier from flies.

Well, it seems you have got your answer...good for you!
In case people are reading and want an answer, for my horses we use a fly mask (that covers the ears) and Bronco fly spray (I think it is by Farnum). It is relatively cheap, especially when it is on sale at Dover Saddlery! It seems to work the best, and we have tried a good portion of fly sprays on the market!
As the bugs also bother me when I ride, I use a human fly mask I found at Walmart in the hunting section (it fits right over my helmet!), and plenty of bug spray. I spray my clothes and my skin.

Well brush your horse, and every once in a while hose it down. Also, you can get a cover up for the face if flies are on it's eyes, muzzle, or cheeks. This won't bother the pony.

You cant totally keep the flies away. But you can get a fly fringe to protect its eyes and face and dont cut yours horses tail to short as they use it to scare the fly away. There is also fly spray to keep them away.

We used citronella oil too - 50ml mixed with about 2L weak cold tea and 1L vinegar. Works a treat. Careful if your horse is grey though, it can stain a bit!
Some people say Skin-so-soft products from (I think) Avon are fly repellants.

i see that you have got an answer already but we used to put citronella oil on a brush and brush it all over them - flies hate it and its a nice natural way to combat flies, sorry i missed your first question!
