go to right click My Computer, go to Properties, go to Hardware, click on device manager..look for Sound, video.....is there a yellow exclamation mark or a red X on it.
If so, expand by click on the + double click you sound and click on trouble shoot. It will step you throught the process. Or if you want to try, instead of click troubl shoot, go to the Driver Tab and update the driver.
If that doesn't work,, delete the device and reboot the computer and it will find it again.

was this a new main drive or an add on to your system?
if a main drive (c:) then your sound card drivers will need to be installed onto it, all other drivers that XP did not pick up as well.
if an add on, in other words your c: drive has remained the same, then you could have done one of two things.
while moving your pc to fit the drive you may have pulled off the lead from cd rom to the mobo that gives sound from the rom or you may have loosened the jack plug for your speakers at the back of the tower.
some progs have an annoying habit of muting your sound when you run them (power dvd does this on mine) so go to control panel-sounds and audio devices-and check a sound card is showing, from there you can also check to make sure everything is on and not muted.
while there it is a good idea to check the option to show volume control in the taskbar, a left click will give a volume slider, a right click will give other options.

To hear sound from a CD drive on older computers, a thin lead had to be connected from the drive to the sound card. This could easily be disconnected on installing a new disk drive.

i don't know crap about computers but something happend to my sound one day.. and i called everyone... asked a question here. and finally my ex bf called me and said... (and you can try this, don't know if it will work but..)
he said go to the bottom of your screen right hand side.. where the little icons are and click on the 'volume' button if you have one.. like where it has the little smiley face for messinger...
anyway.. check out your 'volume' and your 'wave' and all the other settings..
my 'wave' was turned way down.. how it got that way ? but i turned it back up... and bam.. there it is sound...
try that.. if it doesn't work i don't know anything else to do... and i don't get best answer..
good luck. i know it's very frustrating!!!

sounds like you need to install sounds drivers....
If the sound card is built onto the motherboard....locate the model number to find out which sound drivers you need....
if it is a separate sound card...find the model number on that...and install the corresponding drivers...
many drivers can be found at www.driverguide.com

You need to download the correct drivers for your soundcard. This is done by visiting the manufacturer's website for your soundcard.
