Insomnia!
Seek out a local college and see if they do what is called "sleep testing". If so, see if they do so for free, if you volunteer.
Otherwise, speak to your doctor about your sleepless nights.
If you take any medications, they might be the culprit. ((I am bi-polar, I deal with many sleepless nights. Most sleep medications do not work for me....but I cope the best I can)).
Are you under a lot of stress? This too can cause a person to lose sleep...you might not be aware right off the bat, so do a bit of deep searching...your unconcious mind might be the culprit.
Also, try to get a daily night routine down.
Eat at the same time, or close to the same time every night. Try to eat at least 3 hours before bedtime if you possibly can.
Then relax! If you work really hard right up til the time you go to bed, your body hasn't had the time to wind down. Watch television, read a book, take a bath....anything to help relax yourself.
Go to bed the same time every night. If you don't fall asleep right away, don't stress over it. Get up after 30 minutes and read or drink a cup of tea. Do not watch television, it tends to keep you up longer.
Try to do everything the same time each night if you can, to train your body over again.
I hope something here helps. Good luck *winks*

I have had this problem since I was about 12. The ideal sleep pattern for me is to go to bed around 1am and get up around 9 or 10am. Unfortunately most regular jobs etc dont allow for this type of pattern.
I cannot fall asleep before midnight. I can go to bed at 9 but I will lie there and stare at the ceiling for 3 or 4 hours. It doesnt matter how tired I am during the day either. Once it gets to about 7pm I get a second wind and have lots of energy again.
***Re: sleep testing. Didnt work for me. I have enough trouble sleeping as it is and then they go and put all these monitor thingys on you and tell you to sleep as per normal.... Yeah Right!!!!
