if you can't sing, then stick to plays. if you can sing, and are not a strong singer, then practice, practice. pick a song that you know you'll remember, and that you sing really well. DON'T pick a song from the musical. that is a big no no.

Monologues are difficult, but tend to be gender-specific. There are books out there of best monologues for women; don't know whether they exist for men.

If you're female, try something from Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues" or from John Patrick Shanley's "Doubt", or from "Wit". Also try "Pride's Crossing" by Tina Howe--it was a one woman show as well, and was one of the most wonderful theatrical experiences of my life.

Men: Equus, Glengarry Glen Ross, anything by Spalding Gray or Eric Bogosian. I think these are much easier to come by, generally.

Musically, I agree with the prior posters--stick with stage craft, non musicals, unless you're just dying to be in the chorus.

If you absolutely feel the need to sing, how about a character piece from another musical comedy:
1) Just no time at all - Pippin
2) I believe in you - How to succeed in business without really trying
3) Little known facts - You're a good man Charlie Brown
These are all for female voice.

For men:
1) Suppertime or The Baseball Game - You're a good man, Charlie Brown
2) With You on My Arm or Masculinity - La Cage Au Folles
3) All I Care About Is Love - Chicago

They said, PRACTICE made perfect! Try swimming by holding your breath under the water for a seconds, 10-12-13-14 and soon until you reach the point.

Get the movie from a rental store and practice THOSE songs. The ones that will actually be in the Musical.

Get a good vocal coach. They can teach you good methods and since it is a musical, you need to be able to sing WELL.

AND PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.
