in my original post I didn't list the printers I had tried, I recently built (or rather had built) a new pc, I am running Windows Vista. I have with no success tried to install 2 new printers, a Epson DX5000 and a Brother DCP-330 both of which have Vista drivers available to download. With both installations I get the same problem, at the stage of connecting the printer to my pc via my USB the installation stops, (i.e. the company installation screen does not change), the Windows new hardware screen comes up, with the usual 3 options. When I choose the search for drivers option no drivers can be found. With my limited knowledge I have come to the conclusion it is a motherboard issue. That said when I look at the connections of other printers they are connected to a 'virtual USB port for printer', when I look in my device manager there is no such port to connect to. Has anyone else had similar issues, if so how did they overcome them, I would be very grateful of any advise given.

Try to install driver without connecting printer. And you may find virtual port at configuration of port of printer(I am not sure). But you must try ur mother board updates for vista.I am sure this will solve ur problem.

Assuming homestead windows: a million. attempt it on yet another computer. If it fails there too, it may be the printer itself. 2. in case you used the USB: then now attempt the parallel cable or vica versa. 3. at the same time as making use of the USB-cable: with maximum USB-printers, you want to position in the motive force earlier connecting it. in the different case: eliminate the USB-cable, eliminate the motive force, reboot, installation the motive force, reboot, connect the printer (ideally to an USB-port that you probably did not use earlier for that printer). 4. attempt yet another type of printer on the computer. If that one fails too: it may be a prevalent application problem with homestead windows. examine if the printer spooler service is all started. yet you shoud get an mistakes in that route. in the different case, installation the mainboard drfvers back or get the hot from the producer information superhighway website. you would possibly want to submit the mistakes or more beneficial useful: screenshots for figuring out to purchase more beneficial useful help.

Welcome to the Vista Nightmare

In my humble opinion you do not have a faulty motherboard, you have a faulty operating system! Most drivers have not been correctly updated for Vista yet. The driver model has changed drastically and companies are trying to beef up XP drivers to work.

If at all possible install windows XP on the machine (no need to activate) and then load XP drivers for these devices. I bet it works.

Only answer is to wait until this miserable mess is sorted. (6 - 12 months?)

Many printers do not yet have drivers available for Vista. That is probably your problem.
