Some of the larger external drives like the Seagate or Maxor Onetouch have their own power supplies so battery drain is minimal.

external hard drives can be useful with laptops which can sometimes have limited space though less so today. I doubt it would rain your battery particularly fast, kind of like a usb perhaps though the extra programs needed to use it (im assuming it is kind of like a backup) may drain some battery, I doubt it would be severe.

They work great. Sure, any USB device that uses power from the computer will reduce battery life, but that's something that you can't really change. I suggest using a USB stick if you can get away with it as it uses MUCH less power than an external drive. USB sticks are around 2GB or more now.

External HDD are also called USB HDD, so by attaching it to usb port you can use it on your laptop also.
