I am a designer so I can help. The only real option is to use transparency. This can be used by selecting the layer and change 'normal' from the drop down menu to 'multiply'. Failing this when you import into indesign you can cut and paste into or if you save as an eps in freehand it wont have a white background when you import it. Hope this helps :)

Using Photoshop:

Clicki on the magic wand tool, then the white background so it selects all the white. Right click and click on "Select Inverse". This should change the cropping to perfectly match the outlining of the logo. Now Go to Edit --> Cut.

Open a new image file, and in the popup that let's you select the size and other details, make sure background is set to Transparent.

Go to Edit --> Paste and it should dump your logo onto a transparent background. Then use Save For Web, not just Save, and that'll do ya!

I'm no expert, but what I do in photoshop is add the logo as a layer and delete the background. I usually do this by selecting the various bits to the background using the magic wand tool, unless the layers need to be blended better.
