My problem is that we have a host computer that is quite some distance away from the remaining hosts on the network. We wish to restrict or limit activities that can be performed on the far away host computer in order to ensure that no illegalities are carried out through the host computer.
It may interest you to know the followings :
we use windowXP
we link the server to the network with the aid of a 3com 24 ports switch
we use cable modem server
Anxiously awaiting you usual helpful response.

What activities are you trying to limit? You can control the server through one of many ways.

You can install a firewall on that computer and block the ports and protocols you want to prevent.

You can use Microsoft Windows Active Directory to prevent the activities on the server. This can be done the local policy and Group Policy Objects on the server itself.

You can also monitor processes on the server with Security software such as Checkpoint Firewall-1, Norton Internet Security, or Checkpoint Security's ZoneAlarm Security Suite.

Your question is too vague about what you are trying to prevent for anyone to really be able to help you.

Don't feel hurt please. In my opinion you knowledge of network administration is slightly low. You will have to ask your system administrator to curtail the specific rights of the specific user, assigned during your network setup.
