doesn't that mean that the racists win because the word goes back to being extremely sesitive to use by anyone? I would think that if it wasn't illegal and in common usage by everyone (especially African Americans) then it would lose some of it's bite wouldn't it? Or should it be banned totally simply because it is offensive and derogatory?

I'm very cautious about any infringement upon freedom of speech.
What would happen to the works of Mark Twain, of PG Wodehouse? They contain that loatesome word. Toss out a classic like Huckleberry Finn?! (These authors must be seen in the context of the time in which they were written, just as the words of the US Founding Fathers who were unjust to blacks and to women.)

I regard this as political correctness, which I loathe. Such a measure changes nothing of substance. Racists use PC as a shield. Far better to have the uginess out in the open, so we can fight it. I can think of several words used about women which anger me greatly, but I'd not have them banned by legilsation.

In this age of PC, we seem to have forgotten that trite but true, "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me" Of course words can hurt like hell, but they aren't to be feared as acts of violence are.

Yes, I think it would help the racists win.

And what would we ban next? This could go on and on.

I dislike "caucasion." It sounds like the brand of a shoe. I think it could get just that silly,

This country was founded on principles of freedom in religion, SPEECH, and some other things. Now, in recent years, especially since bush was been in office, there are silent backlash from speaking your mind. You can no longer say certain things in an open area without running the risk of offending some sensitive powder puff.

The n word is not really a touchy subject, it's how that word gets used. It is socially okay for some groups (like the music industry) to use the word as if the definition was: homie.Example: My *****! It is NOT OKAY to use the word for the purpose of offending a Black American.Example: Them there *******.

People are still going to use the word regardless. It is illegal to drive faster than 66 mph but people do it anyway, right? So what makes people think that other people will not use the word? Our ignorant government does not see this.

It is up to a person, or the people, either not to deliberately offend or not to get offended. A government or state can not control people in that way. So that "law" is void and voidable.

The government is filled with ******, as in, ignorant people.
(See it's all how you use the word!) Lol.

First of all how can you make it "illegal" to say any word? In the U.S we have the freedom of speech, don't we? I do not condemn this word at all, I just think that we as black people have steered away from what the true meaning of N****r, which is IGNORANT. I mean if you don't mind being called that by your friend the so be it, but just know when you do you are disrespecting that person and your ancestors who fought so we would not be degraded by calling us that.

no words should be banned. start that and the next thing you know we will start banning books. basically, if it is ok for blacks to say it then its ok for everyone. only problem is that its not ok to say it in my opinion. oh, well, what a dilemma. maybe people shouldn't be so touchy in general. i mean, what the hell do i care what you say. better you go ahead and let the secret out so that i know where i stand with you than to hide behind fake smiles.
