Anime usually has continuity and a dramatic feel. When is the last American cartoon that you can think of that has those two elements? About 99% of American cartoons are in no way continuous. Popular cartoons like The Simpsons, Family Guy, Aqua Teen, etc. consist of 30 minute shows (10 for ATHF) that in no way relate to an overall plot arc. Most anime tell a grander story that lasts for the entire anime's run.

Anime has been around for a long time, but just now it has becoming popular.

Anime, as you may know, is the Japanese word for animation cartoon. Though it is a cartoon, people (mostly teens and young adults) like anime for many different reasons. Some reasons are: it's not kiddish (as are most cartoons), it has violance, sexual apperance (hentai, or whatever) bad language, it's on another level of humor that is not kiddish-stupid and the detail (color, shading, style) unlike that is shown here in America.

I believe people prefer anime more than american cartoons for it is more towards them (the teens age group) than kids (though a lot of kids watch it too, though they shouldn't because it contains A LOT of mature stuff that kids shouldn't watch), plus anime, i guess, has interesting story lines (or plots) that are way more interesting than cartoons that show different stuff every episode, while anime continues on and on until the episodes (or series) is over.

There are a lot of different reasons (most of them I have said) but I think another reason is that it is from a different country and not here in the U.S. Stuff from other countries amazes U.S. citizens so much. This is just my theory...

Hope this helps.

Anime is a tv show some people are just attracted to. And people dont like ALL anime, its also about whats it about, is it more realistic or fantasy? Sci fi or magic? Its like asking a lord of the rings fan, why do they like fantasy movies? Becuase thier just attracted to it, they love how its so unrealistic or how the graphics are so pretty or the story line is so great, or a sports fan why they like sports, cause its so fast paced and suspensy. Anime is the same thing, people watch it because they think the style is awesome, its something that they can put thier own ideas in like doujinshi (fan comics). Some people really love anime, and some people really hate anime. You just have to find the right one to suit your style whether a really realistic romance one, or an action anime, or a funny anime.

My reason is because of story. I don't find much on TV that interests me. I watch Battlestar Galactica, and that is really about it for series. I enjoy shows with a continuing story line.
Sure, there are plenty of shows like that, examples are Lost, Jericho, a few others, but a lot of TV now is reality TV.

I hate reality TV. That's what ESPN, CNN, and Fox News is for; that is reality TV. No reality cartoons on TV, except for Drawn Together, one of the greatest parodies to come along in a long time.

Another thing with the stories are they cannot be hidden in special effects. While animation isn't dirt cheap, it is much cheaper than special effects that are movie or high-end TV effects. You cannot hide a poor story, poor writing, poor voice acting, etc, etc, with special effects. Animation quality is normally very good as the baseline. People who watch cartoons are simply not easily impressed by fancy special effects, so the story will have to stand on its own.

The animation and plot line is light-years ahead of American animation in all aspect. Character development, story-line, visual affects. They also have different types to appeal to every ones taste, from cutie and cuddly to gory. From politically correct to down right perverted! Anime reaches a much broader audience then any other type of animation.

Because it's like a soap opera. There's a lot of drama, and the dialogue is written dramatically.
