i know.... i do that 2...... i had this one teacher that every time u said "like" u had to start ur sentence over...... i think its just a way to gather our thoughts while we r speaking so we know what to say next..... or a silence filler.... so instead of having to think a sec and have a sec of silence we say "like"......

It's a bad habit that started from the movies of the 80's. My daughters 13 and 14 used to say it all the time until a few months ago, it drove me nuts. However, through a combination of scolding, grounding and spanking, we have nearly eliminated the annoying habit.

I never said it as a teenager. I did have a few Friends that said a word all the time one of the words was "thing". Can't remember the other one but it used to annoy the s**t out of me. All it is is a bad habit if you try hard enough you can stop you self from saying it.

Sometimes when you here other people saying a word a lot, you tend to say the same word subconsciously. The only thing that can be done is thinking before you speak. I say the word "thing" a lot. eg. Can you get the thing for me. Thing meaning remote. Lol

ha ha!! I have a teen sister who does the exact same thing!! i actually sit sometimes when she has a phone conversation and count the times she says it. But it just like any "catch phrase". Once you start saying what everyone else is saying it, you get use to it and before you know it, you're excessively using that word, trust me, i know. that's how profanity was for me and i finally stopped using it!! but i was exposed to it and before i knew it i was saying it too much, so that's all it is, its no big deal.

I used to do that, infact I still might lol. It's become part of our vocabulary with the way it is used. Television, media, even music, it is just something that has the same meaning as saying "um" inbetween words in a sentence.
"I'm not sure like where I want to go"
"I'm not sure um where I want to go"

It's just a bad habit.
All you can do it try breaking yourself of it. Put a dime in a jar every time you say it, and donate all the money to some charity for example.

i dont know. casue i dont do that anymore. i used to do it all the time but then i stoped. i talk a lot, and fast when i get excited. i used to say like to fill in a time when i was trying to think of what else to say, or to describe someones actions or feelings. but one of my friends was really bothered by that and she used to tell me, "christina you dont 'like' something. you either do it or you dont. use it the right way!" (lol) so i used the actual word that was supposed to go there instead adn eventually i just stopped.

Its mainly due to poor vocabulary and lack of the skills necessary to adequately explain ones self.

It's not just girls that do it. I have a 16-year-old son who says it all the time. Hopefully it's just a phase!!!
