I own a condo and want to install a window air conditioner. Problem is I don't have standard windows. And I've heard from numerous people that a window ac is much more effective and cheaper than a portable unit. I do have a sliding glass door. Anyone have any success in installing a window ac in a sliding glass door? The ac unit will prevent the door from fully closing and there would be a gap left at the top from the unclosed sliding door. How would you seal this gap? Also, another thought was using the window ac in the bedroom door way and dispensing the heat into the hallway. But then would have to find a way to seal the whole doorway and cutting a portion out of this seal to fit the ac. Or any other methods you might recommend to installing a "window" ac unit in locations other than a window.

I've been on two jobs where we actually cut a hole in the wall for the AC unit. One house was brick at that.

Both looked fine after we where through.

I wouldn't have done that on my house, but it is an option for you.

Two things to consider the rest of the house will be hot,and will your outlets handle the extra load. Personally central air is your best option and 4500 dollars is pretty high get more quotes.I live in FL some power companies some times help with the expense. At the least I would call more professionals they may have a ductless option. I know your predicament its hotter than h down here good luck.

like he said cut a hole in the wall, but I'd bet you can't in a condo
patio door open it up set the a/c in the hole, plug it in, cut a chunk of plywood to fill the rest of the hole, cut blocks to secure your patio door ( lay in tract - wedge one high & low )
