No, violence will not prevent violence but will BREED violence. Consider how shouting at someone will cause them to shout back... in the same way, violence will bring the violence out in others. Of course some people are, by nature, non-violent, but you are discussing using violence to deter existent violent behaviour. When someone is prone to violence, introducing violence will act as an instigator, fueling a violent response.

That depends.

If A were to use violence to stop B, it would only last as long as A can intimidate B into submission. But if B decides to retaliate, it could escalate into a full blown war.

Another way is restraining. That can only work if A is dominantly more resourceful and stronger than B and can incapacitate him in some way or form. If not, A can't hold B down.

The best solution is not violence but reformation. If A can reform B, B will no longer perform violence because B's heart/intent is changed.

It can definitely be part of the solution and is often necessary, for example a police officer restraining a drunk or self-defense against an attacker. However usually it will need to be backed up with more constructive approaches, for example, discovering why the drunk was drunk and treating them. The mistakes people make is to use violence to solve a problem and then fail to follow up by helping both the attacker and the victim.

This is a slightly simplistic argument, but it is generally true on any scale.

yes.

When we took out the Nazis they stopped killing Jews.

Also when we dropped the bombs on japan they stopped trying to take over the world.

on a smaller scale if some crazy guy has a gun and starts killing random people it will take violence to stop them. That is why the police have guns. If no one was willing to use violence to stop violence one violent person could just roam the streets killing anyone they pleased.

The only way to stop a violent person or group of people is with some sort of violence. Sometimes if it is small groups you can use non-lethal forms like tear gas, fire hoses and stun guns.

However if someone is truly dedicated to something enough to kill people for what they believe in there is no way to stop them without some kind of violence.

Violence begets violence. It will all end when everyone agrees that it will end. Sadly, this is not a realistic expectation. Sure, in the short term one violent act can appear to stop another but the bigger picture is that we are a violent species and the worst violence is often random and therefore difficult to prevent, violently or otherwise.

claustrophobia's view. the word meaning does make a difference. in being able to answer the question. at tournaments there can be seen blood shed, in the operating room of a hospital there too is the shedding of blood. a woman has a monthly blood flow. each for different meanings to life. Are they all to be viewed as acts of violence. when all leave a bruise and scar to be healed? are we to say, the showing of blood is the showing of a violence? If my blood has not been shed nor a bruise appear upon my flesh or bone yet the mind knows it to mean a violence has been done and for those reasons the mind seeks a law to stop what has been put into motion.

Ofcourse not. Violence always lead to violence and create terrorism. Look at Iraq and Afghanistan. What Allied forces are getting? more violence each day. There is an old saying that "pen is mighter than the sword". Its true even today. Sooner the world realises the better.
