There are many different types of dragons and their symbolism varies. It depends on whether you are referring to the mythological Western or Eastern dragons. All had religious meaning and were worshipped for their diverse characteristics including color and personality traits.

In European folklore dragons are usually portrayed as evil. In Asia dragons are usually good. Dragons in other parts of the world vary considerably (usually evil in North America -- and yes, North America does have indigenous dragon legends).
