My co-workers and myself have created a Heart Walk team for the American Heart Association, and will be walking again this year in September. Last year we held bake-sales and all the tried and true fundraisers, but this year, we want to take a different, healthy approach. I have no idea how to hold a jump-a-thon, so I was wondering if anyone had experience with something like that. Any tips or ideas would be well accepted. Thank you in advance!

I remember I had something like that in elementary school. It was called a jump-off or something clever like that. Basically, during P.E. the teacher would pick the best jump ropers and enter them in the contest/ fundraiser. We were paired off with other schools and who ever lasted the longest would earn money for the school based on minutes on the ropes. There were different levels: one foot at a time, both feet together and only one foot jumping. I think with the one foot jumping, you were allowed to switch off feet as long as it was only one on the ground. Also, there were team jumps. Some were, three people at the same time on a long rope, jumping in and out of a moving long rope, and of course: Double Dutch!!! Well, it was super fun and I think we got second place. I imagine a hula hoop would work just the same with levels based on what body part you use to hula. It was exciting and we were more motivated to do the jumps because we viewed it more as recess play, than regular walking or running (which is very healthy, but it discourages alot of people out of embarrasment of being last). With jump ropes it's just fun even if you can't jump more than a few skips!!! In fact, you can have just-for-fun or how-to areas just for those people. With their new found skills they may be encouraged to hop, jump, and hula for a good cause!!! I am no help in the actual fundraising part, sorry... But have fun and good luck!!! P.S. The best jump ropes are the old school ones with the tube beads. They hurt if they smack you but they are more consistent with movement than flimsy fabric rope or plastic whip ones, which you constantly trip on. As for hulas, it varies per person... they come in different hoop sizes and weights. Enjoy!!!
