Not all are. In olympics they are, simply so that it is easier for the various judges to be sure that that each track qualifies for Olympics standards, regardless of the language they might speak, but, I've run races around the track that are both counterclockwise and clockwise, and I've see horse races run in both directions as well.

As to why the Olympics are run in counter-clockwise fashion, it is likely simply because the first of the modern Olympics games was organized mainly by Europeans, who read from left to right, would prefer to see a race running before them from left to right.

Not that there might not have been other factors involved to which I am not privvy.

No genuine answer, yet to the folk correcting him on anti/counter clock smart, anti-clockwise is right, and utilized in England. marvelous question nevertheless. Counterclockwise is western.

many UK racecourses run clockwise....Ascot, Sandown and Kempton to name but 3...
