Most own quite a few. Not only for the difference in sound or playability, but they are considered "tools of the trade" by the IRS. Therefore if you make your living playing guitar, all guitars, strings, rep airs etc are tax write offs.

Unlike an answer above, most of the pros I sell to buy them for a special sound, not just as tax writeoffs.

Most of the pros I know own and regularly play in the neighborhood of 20 guitars.

as a professional vocalist of 42 years most guitarists when playing would take one or two guitars with them on a gig, playing one and having a spare readyon a stand on stage in case of breaking a string as for at home who knows it depends on how much money they have

im a drummer, but from my band members who are only semi-pro i would have to assume that the average pro has at least an acoustic guitar, an acoustic electric, 2 or 3 nice electric guitars to be used on stage, all somewhat similar, a cheap electric for backup, a seven string or bass for novelty, and at least 2 more guitars at random for fun. so id say no less than 8 for a successful tourng pro. anybody who has their own signature model guitar, you can bet they own at least 20 or 30 guitars.
