Does anyone ever see that changing in our lifetime? Can a city like Chicago ever leapfrog LA?

Along the countryside edges of the Chicagoland suburbs more and more housing developments are springing up; land that was being used for crops is being sold and turned into real estate. Outside of these suburbs is basically farming land with a few small towns here and there, so ChicagoLAND definitely has room to grow and is growing. Whether or not the actual city's population will grow larger than that of L.A. is hard to say.

Chicago offers a very straightforward lifestyle at a large city pace. Being the capital of the Midwest, Chicago is very much a redneck, douchebag city, and this I think is what makes it attractive to people across America who want the comfort of a suburban/city experience.

Probably not Chicago - it doesn't have alot of room to grow land-wise. Houston could be a candidate. If you consider metro regions, then Chicago is very much a player.

I don't think anybody is going to leapfrog L.A. with the ever growing hispanic population down there.

Yes, that's how they ranked as of 2005.

Number 6 is Phoenix, less than 2000 people behind Philadelphia. With Phoenix's high growth rate it will soon overtake Philadelphia, if it hasn't already.
