I knew someone who took ten years off her age in order to be allowed to work at all. Retirement age at the institution where she worked was 60 and when I knew her she was well past that age. This meant that the employer had deducted national insurance and staff pension contributions for years when it should not have done so, as well as paying in employers' contributions. I don't know how her deception came to light, but when it did she was dismissed immediately. Amazingly, she obtained another job! I never had the gall to ask whether she was doing the same thing at the new place!

People have been lying about their ages at the other end of the scale since time immemorial and many young boys used to pretend that they were of the minimum recruiting age when war broke out. I can imagine that another reason for lying about one's age might be to cover up awkward gaps in one's career which one would prefer not to discuss with a prospective employer. With so much bureaucracy and the use of computers it is harder to do so than in the past. With ID cards it will probably be impossible.

The consequences are likely to be similar to lying about one's qualifications -- a charge of obtaining pecuniary advantage by deception.

First off Crime doesn't pay...Why would you feel the need to lie about your age? There are laws that protect you from age discrimination in the work place...They cheat themselves out of social security earnings and benefits, when it does not match up. They also open the door to have their real identiy stolen or other people's identities stolen. Most times it is an older person that has stolen the identity of someone younger and then try to make it stick. It ruins the life of the person they stole from. It is a twenty jail sentence for using the social security number of someone else if you're caught. Might I also add that when the real person comes along, they can legally claim everything they stole...that's a fact...It is not worth it to the Liar!

Don't you remember when you were younger. Did you ever tell anyone you were older than you were? It's not right but it happens. Depending on the circumstances will determine the consequences. A person lying on a job application should not be hired and should be fired. A younger girl or guy trying to get with someone older and who can get them in serious trouble should be reported. Be careful.

People are vain, and afraid to get older, however, when we're young, we pretend we're older to get drink, older boyfriends, respect amongst elders etc.

there is no legal requirement nowadays with the age discimination acts for a company to request your date of birth on an application for, if they do, they're breaking the law.

Once you are employed they will require this for insurance purposes, national insurance, pension etc.

However, it is illegal to supply fraudluent information, like applying for a job when you're only 14 etc, same as providinf false name etc. could warrant instant dismissal

I'd never put a false age on an official document; that's just stupid and with the age discrimination act should now be unnecessary.
However I have had the problem that people assume I'm joking when I give my true age. I'm not sure I'm happy about this.

Personal vanity. As for job applications, should the interviewer believe your lie and it's subsequently discovered, you should be sacked.

I lied about my age, when I told someone I was a decrepit 92 year-old man and staggered around on walking-sticks.

"You're funny," he giggled.

The consequence of this lie, was a boyfriend half my real age.

if you say you are 25 on a job application and you are really in your fifties they usually pick up on this at the interview and then the ball is up on the slates.
