When someone dies, the typical depth of the grave is 6 feet. So, when some one is "6 feet under" it means that they have died and are buried.

Dead. Traditionally, a person who has died is buried at least 6 feet deep. This depth is generally more than that of which an animal is willing to dig to scavenge meat off the recently deceased. Also, it doesn't stink so bad when the body starts to decompose. Plus, it helps keep the body buried long enough to decompose before erosion destroys the upper layers of soil.

You could have seen a little brainteaser, where you see 6 ft's underneath a line, and the answer to that riddle is 6 feet under.

Dead. People are often burried 6 feet under ground unless you live at sea level then they come up with other ways to "bury" people.

It means that whatever is 6 feet under is dead, deceased, in the coffin, buried, not functioning, kaput, fini, has kicked the bucket, passed over to the other side, bought the farm, gone to that big "..." up in the sky. :D

Feel free to insert your own. Hope you get the idea.

Alibi has it right. It is the depth to keep the body safe from animals, smelling bad and washing away. Many traditions started out as being the most reasonable and simplest action at the time.

dead, kaput, finito, kicked the bucket/can, fin, "in a better place", pushing up daisies.....take your pick

*******also, graves are 6 ft or more deep to protect the deceased from scavenging animals AS WELL AS having a slower decom rate. if the body buried only 4 ft. deep the dirt isn't as cool as the dirt that's 6ft. or more deep.

I think it refers to the depth that the coffin is placed into the ground upon burial.

It also refers to the name of a hit television series on HBO.
