on top of that, i also did house cleaning - exerting more effort with my hands more than i would have done working out in the gym. I'm not too concerned about the muscle pain but the pain in the joints and the change in appearance (it looks arthritic) is freaking me out. will it go back to looking normal or have i totally damaged my hands?

well, the washing got you it seems. the thing you were washing must have had animal in it right? well, my rule for hand maintenance is to soap and water wash at any known discomfort and dryness or as soon as possible. i got some gloves in a catalog that are neoprene, similar to scuba diving gear. hands love this stuff. try to get a pair. caladryl lotion does wonders for appearance. gnarled turns to sinuey and strong looking. so therapy with caladryl lotion is all i know.

You are too young to have arthritis. Too much work is what caused your joints to hurt. Rest your hands. It will go back to normal in 24 hours. If pain persists, use aspirin.
