About 5 years ago I had a very enjoyable tour to some kind of Maori centre whilst visiting Rotorua. A good friend is visiting with her children in a couple of weeks and I was wondering if someone might know what I am talking about and whether it is still worth visiting? (Our travelling partners booked it, so I've got no ideas... any help or other suggestions would be greatly appreciated)

From your description I imagine you are referring to the 'Maori Arts and Crafts Institute'. This is a site that includes mud pools, geysers, a working craft centre, Maori dancing, singing and cultural activities. It is still well worth a visit.

Rotorua, generally, is the best location for viewing Maori culture. Of course, it has a touristic element-how can it not have? Is it too touristic? Not if you pick your spots.

In addition to the Arts and Craft centre, I would suggest that places to visit would be:

Tamaki Maori Village
The Whakarewarewa Village
Wai-o-tapu
Orakeikorako

I have been to all of these places and I believe they are all worth a visit. Rather than give a detailed breakdown, I've given the links to their websites. When your friends get to Rotorua they will be inundated with 'cultural' things to do, so they can have a look at other possibilities if my suggestions dont appeal or they have time left over. Try to avoid the myriad of 'cultural experiences' that are on offer at most of the hotels!!

Rotorua is famous for its geothermal hot springs, and many tourists choose to visit the city.
your friends will have no difficulty finding tour opportunities.
you could do a websearch. the words "Rotorua" and "Maori", together or separately, will probably bring up plenty of results.
