No. The NHL was founded in 1917 with four teams: Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, the original Ottawa Senators, and the Toronto Arenas (now known as the Maple Leafs). The Boston Bruins started in 1924, and the New York Rangers, Chicago Black Hawks (now one word), and Detroit Cougars (now Red Wings) starrted in 1926. The Wanderers and Senators fell by the wayside, and other teams came and went, so by 1942 the league consisted of the six teams that are now referred to as the Original Six, and the these teams would be the only ones in the NHL until it doubled in size in 1967. But they were not really the original teams in the league. Only the Habs and Leafs have been there since the beginning.

the only reason why there called the original six is cause they where the only teams left to play from the early 40's till the 67 expansion. in 1942 i believe the NY Americans left and so did the Montreal Maroons and the Pirates also the year before then it became the Original six of the NHL from the fans.
yes there was allot of other teams back even before the NHL was formed in 1917. several other teams have joined the NHL throughout the 20's like the Quakers for one year the Eagles but these teams folded very fast. there are allot of sites you can find more stuff about all these teams before the NHL was founded in 1917. allot of history of this game.
incudork >>>>>the NHL was founded in 1917 not 1927.
1-Montreal Canadiens Founded in 1909
2-Toronto Arenas Founded 1917 (1919-26 St-Patricks,)(1927 to present Maple Leafs)
3-Boston Bruins (1924)
4-Detroit Red Wings (1926)
5-Chicago Black hawks (1926)
6-New York Rangers (1926)

Only a couple of the "Original Six" were original.
The Montreal Canadians and the Toronto Blue Shirts (known now as the Maple Leafs) are the only original teams left.
The original founding teams of 1917 were the Canadians, the Toronto Arenas (what they were known during the founding of the league), the Montreal Wanderers, and the Ottawa Senators (the original Senators lasted until 1934).

there were other teams before Expention however for the history of the delvoupment of the game the "Orginal Six: were the main teams
Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators(1st creation), Quebec Bulldogs, Toronto Blueshirts were the first 6 teams in 1917. Other teams in the NHL before 1942 when the number of teams were fixed at six there were also Montreal Maroons,Hamilton Tigers,New York/Brooklyn Americans,St Louis Egales and Philadelphia Quakers so the only Original(1917) team remaining is the Canadiens with Tonroto there after 3 name change

They were the original 6 teams when the NHL formed in 1927. Before that hockey was willy nilly and the stanley cup was passed around like a WWE belt.
