I see everybody knows how to search Wikipedia :)
Well, pathogenesis is the way a certain pathogen agent (such as bacteria, virus or fungus) "manages" to infect the "victim". Usually this implies several stages such as adhesion, invasion, then growth and multiplication of the pathogen followed by other processes such as destruction of the tissues or invasion of other tissues.
Each of the stages has special mechanisms depending on the pathogen agent and the host ("victim").
For example, bacteria need an moleculcar factor for adhesion, before being actually able to infect a tissue or a cell. This molecular factor (adhesin) might be a special organelle -such as a fimbria- or a special molecule fragment (for example a glyco-protein) on the exterior surface of the bacterial membrane (for example the case of most Streprococci).
Then, invasion, has its own mecanism too. This could mean the use of hialuronidasic acid to penetrate the tissues or other mechanisms.
Then, in order to be able to grow in the victim's tissues or even to grow inside the host's cell, the pathogen needs to protect from the host's defense mechanisms. This can be done for example by the use of coagulase (in the case of Staphylococcus) - preventing this access of the host's immune factors.

Pathogenesis
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
Pathogenesis is the mechanism by which a certain etiological factor causes disease (pathos = disease, genesis = development).
Some forms of pathogenesis are:
Inflammation
Malignancy
Tissue breakdown
In most diseases, there are multiple pathogenetical processes at work. For example, certain cancers arise from dysfunction of the immune system (skin tumors and lymphoma after a renal transplant - which requires immunosuppression).
Often, a potential etiology is identified by epidemiological observations before a pathological link can be drawn between the cause and the disease.
Although I didn't know this off the top of my head. It is still correct.
Hope this helps.

Rainbows have always brought a smile on my face...its a sign of optimism and joy when the sun shines in the horizon after a heavy down pour...i still remember during my school days i used to run towards rainbows trying to find out where exactly it is located and take a closer look at the beauty of nature. For me rainbows will always fill my heart with joy and happiness. Great Question !! TC!
