yep, the previous fella is correct. in terms of gaming revenue, Macau surpassed Las Vegas as the world's top gaming location (the figures that he posted look correct to me - $6 billion range). There is a bit of discrepancy based upon whether the gaming revenue is calculated pre-tax or post-tax, but nobody is disputing that Macau is still growing at an incredible rate that easily out-paces Las Vegas. By the end of 2007 (maybe sooner) there will be no disagreement to which city is larger in terms of gaming revenue.
I moved to Macau full-time middle of 2006, though came for the first time in Feb. 2004 (pre-Sands). Since I came here full-time I've seen 5 major properties open including Wynn, StarWorld, and Grand Lisboa. That's not even counting MGM Grand Macau or Venetian which both soft open this year. On average 16.4 hotel rooms per day will be built until 2009. This place is definitely worth checking out. Just started a blog with some colleagues http://eblog.gomacau.com Give it a read if you fancy...

As big a fan as I am of Las Vegas the answer is Macau at least by dollars gambled and the hotel/casino "hold"

Remember you ask for "#1 gambling city" - Because when it comes to a resort destination Las Vegas is 10 times Macau >at least right now<

The Las Vegas Advisor had a rundown on the numbers for Las Vegas & Macau a while back. The story also ran in USA today, if you're interested in doing a search.

The gambling numbers for the period January - November 2006. The gap is actually widening each month in favor of Macau.
Macau - 6.485 Billion
Las Vegas - 6.079 Billion
The numbers represent the amount won by the casinos in each city.

Unfortunately I know this answer all too well!
I work in an exclusive Vegas hotel and it is also the mecca for Baccarat, a traditional Chinese game.
Our Chinese customer base has dwindled dramatically.
Vegas is great for most people but the Chinese ARE THE MOST PROLIFIC GAMBLERS AROUND!!!
They don't care about high profile chefs, big shows or fancy restaurants. IT IS ALL ABOUT THE ACTION.
Why travel to the US when the big casinos have gone to them. And, these hotels are not as large as the Vegas sites but every bit as nice.
With all the prosperity in China, these casinos are 10 deep with gambling crazy patrons.
Macau has changed Vegas, why do you think Vegas is so expensive now, because we have had to create revenue in other areas of the hotel.
That is why Vegas hotel rooms and restaurants are so expensive. We are resorts WITH gaming.
Macau is pure gaming.

Macao. That is where all the Vegas gambling corporations are now investing heavily--Sands, Wynn, MGM. Even the Australians are coming, investing and playing. Vegas will be Vegas for another 10 years then an Atlantic City. Macao and Shanghai will be the area.
