Democracy seems to have become a mantra for Western governments - one of those words, like liberty or equality, that is thought to be above criticism.
However, I think those governments have completely lost sight of what it means. The very governments that claim to "spread democracy" are those who ignore the huge majority of popular opinion against them in their own countries; in the case of the US, there's a president that in 2000 was prepared to take office even though he had lost the election.
This supposed principle of democracy seems to boil down to the people having a say once every 4/5 years, in an election that is often between two pretty unpopular parties.
The rest of the time, it's plutocracy all the way, while we little people slave away getting poorer to make the rich richer.
I'm pro-democracy, but I think what we have at the moment is a sham.

It was never alive. Its an ideal that never will be achieved nor do we want it to be achieved. Democracy is mob rule. Minority rights are not respected in a Democracy. Countries that are called Democracy are really not. America And India are both Republics. I don't even know how anyone can explain how a country can be a democracy and still have a Queen. A good government has to have a good balance of all ideology. That means we need to take pieces from Socialist governments to be incorporated into ours.

democracy has been dead for a long time, and you should be happy about it. the more relevant question is "Is America still a constitutional republic?". the declaration of independence, the constitution, and the bill of rights, neither of these 3 documents even use the word democracy.

Wow looks like everyone on the net needs a refresher in American History.
We have never been a democracy and we never will be; we are a REPUBLIC. A country governed by laws, not a popularity contest like democracy...

Democracy is not the best political solution, look at Palestine & Iran? You think tey are good? If not why? because they are not fulfill Americans right?
America (leaders only) just pretend to promote it but it is a complete wrong sometimes.
I think Iraq before was better then when Bush convert it to World's HELL.

Yes it is dead.
During JFK's presidency US was a real democracy. But since he was killed, democracy died with him.
During Bush's presidency, the patriot act and homeland security make sure it is burried deep underground.
