The vast majority of us have views in between those of Barbra Streisand and Ann Coulter. Is it just easier to label people and not have to think about the nuances and subtleties that separate our opinions?

All humans have good and bad traits. Even W I suppose. One of them is thinking that everybody else is crazy except for me. But if you want to have friends, you have to accommodate other peoples' disparate views. And you must keep religion and politics mute, unless you know you're with like-minded folk. I think it was Keats that said something to the effect that you can't know what is beautiful without experiencing ugliness. Possibly the reason people on this site are as you suggest, only black or white politically, is that these are very unusual times for the U.S. W may well be our worst president. That would certainly push a lot of people over the edge of accommodation. Or the people speaking here are isolationists, unable to accept other people's views. Perhaps this medium is most "comfortable" for such folks.

Cultural biases, religious affiliations, education, religious indoctrination; there are many reasons this occurs. It is a bit of a relief knowing that there are so many people who are politically knowledgeable, though. I'd rather be in a nation that doesn't repress our rights to vote or learn about our candidates. Though I do think the winner is declared long before the game is over.
(I admire the cartoon character, Hank Hill, because he has a crisis when he comes to realize his candidate for President has a very limp and weak handshake. How many of us have the flimsiest of reasons for disliking a candidate. Then when they don't get elected it's just as easy to say, "I saw it coming, he was weak to begin with.")

Sadly, it is not just the people on this site. In recent years, we have seen far more partisan politics as the hard-liners from each party are elected by their backers. These people believe their party is right everyone else is wrong. Until we get enough people willing to put aside the differences instead of dwelling on them and work together, it will only get worse.

That is the way most people are raised. not only by their parents, but also society in general. America is filled with sheep. Very rarely does anyone step outside the box. I personally think outside the box. It is supposidly easier to fit in if you follow the heard. I have never really fit in.
