I have a friend doing a long stretch of time in prison. He really wants some catalogs sent to him and they have to be sent directly. Where can I find a listing of free catalogs that I can order and have sent to him?

"Free" you probably won't get unless they are religious type magazines. The other problem is you need to find out exactly what types of magazines the inmate can get. I work in a 1700 inmate facility and we outlawed a magazine because after its new publication after 6 months the cover shots advertising the cars got skimpier and skimpier. Once you get the subject matter ok'd you will have to contact the publisher. Also there is a website called magazine .com. Go to the website and pick our your selections then call them. You will need to give them them:
i/m's name
id number
name of the facility
address
city/state/zip

If there is not room for 5 lines put the id number on the same line as the name or leave out the name of the facility as most prisons are well known by the postal service where they are located. Don't put a particular unit/cell because i/m's may have to be moved and it will further delay the mail getting to your party. There is delay enough as all mail is searched except legal which is opened in front of the officer delivering it.

Another option is to contact the facility directly and speak to the inmate advocate if they have one or the chaplain. Also, contact the facility to find out how much the inmate can have. Local and County jails are different than prisons although a lot of civilians & lay people don't realize that. Inmates can be in county jails for up to 2 years. Since I don't know what you mean by long stretch, contact the facility and find out what their rule amount is. Some places allow only 5 books, some only allow room for all items including magazines to come in if it all fits into an under the bed box and some places don't allow magazines that have staples. And please contact the facility to confirm any info you get from your friend. This works both ways. People in prisons & jails get to see behavior your friends, family members etc don't show you sometimes and then again, sometimes the info they are giving you is what they got from another inmate or someone on duty who might not know so always check with the facility. Hope this helps.
