Ganguly

I can't believe you need to ask this. And I can't believe that some people think Ganguly is better, only a few months ago Ganguly couldn't get a game in the Indian team.

And according to the records Ganguly is better - where has this come from? Seems to be based on opinion rather than fact.

Tests - Ponting 9368 runs @ 59.29, Ganguly 5435 runs @ 40.86.
(Before March 18)
One dayers - Ponting 271 games, 9992 runs @ 42.70
Ganguly 287 games, 10536 runs @ 41.31.

But the story gets more interesting when looking at recent data.

In their last 30 Tests, Ponting averages 74, Ganguly averages 36.
In their last 30 one dayers, Ponting averages 49, Ganguly averages 35.

The numbers don't lie.

Ponting, then daylight, then Ganguly, maybe....

Ganguly opens the innings in ODIs and comes low down the order in Test Matches. Ponting on the other hand is a middle order batsman in both forms of the game. Technique wise both are eqyal. When it comes to aggression in batting,Ganguly takes time to come into his elements whereas Ponting starts slam bang straightway because the batsman before would have built up an innings. There is very little to choose between the two.If Ganguly were to play for Australia and Ponting for India, the style and approach would be entirely different. But in the present scheme of things, Ponting has an edge over Ganguly
