The classical parametric statistic test is a Students t-test.

A widely used non-parametric test is the Mann-Whitney test.

If you were going to a stat test on bactaria in food it would depend on how your counted the amount of bactaria whether you should do a non-parametric or parametric test.

If you actually count the density of bactaria then a parametric test is okay, but if you've given it a rating, (like from 0-5), then you need to do a non-parametric test.
