Yes, it can sometimes take hours just to get across town. Gas is also VERY expensive in these cities. When I lived in San Diego, I rode the trollies and buses everywhere.

My husband and I live in Seattle, and we don't own a car, and we never will own a car because we 'value life on Earth' and are 'ecologically minded' ... but we find that most people ... including those who take a bus to work and home again ... do "own a vehicle" and use it when they have to 'go shopping' or just want to 'travel' ... but we even 'went on vacation' in Seattle this year, and stayed in 'the oldest hotel in the city' and had a BLAST ... and we 'never needed a car' because the busses are GOOD. If MORE PEOPLE lived the way we do, then this world would not be 'hard up' in facing 'global warming' ...
We also live in a 'third floor walk up apartment' and don't have any 'landscaping' (big polluter is 'yard maintenance equipment') or an 'elevator' (uses power to go up and down) ... and we are both 'older' (I'm 56, he's 49) and both have 'terrible health problems' and the 'paramedics' have told us we should get a 'ground floor apartment' ... but we live where we do because we get some added 'exercise' when we 'climb the stairs' ... so I guess you could say that we are 'ecological FREAKS' ... but we think we are 'nice, good people.'

It's true that people may own vehicles but use them only when they really have to, like for going way out of town...opting for public transportation in town for various reasons. Some of the reasons are fuel and insurance, and parking costs. But I think there are many more people who don't own vehicles, that use public transportation.
