I believe it was Steven Spielberg. It first hit mainstream as a musical. Because of the overwhelming notoriety it was then shopped around in the movie genre. Alot of the singers, and dancers in the musical were basically unknown, but when it was time for the big screen all the big players came out in force. This is not a bad thing because with the likes of Danny Glover, Oprah Winfrey, Whoopie Goldberg, and other notables I believe the star power shot it right to the top. Oprah Winfrey as we know is a talk show host but personally I think she is a hell of an actress. I have seen her in other made for tv movies, and in all of them I think her performances were great.
