you are very wrong !!! a computer cannot diagnose a bent push rod , i know some people that are functionally illiterate that can rebuild an engine better than factory , if you don't have the "feel" all the computers in the world won't stop you from stripping threads. i think you should apologize for your ignorant remarks.

Why stop there? Plenty of people have built kit-cars. Where's the sense in buying a ready-made car from a manufacturer when you can build your own?
Most anyone could also learn how to plumb their bathroom, or do their own taxes, or build their own house. The reason trades exist is that we often prefer to exchange money for time and expertise, rather than doing everything ourselves. If the mechanic trade were unnecessary, there wouldn't be any mechanics.

I cannot believe that you are that ignorant.
First of all all cars don't have computers in them.
Second, do you have any idea how many different models are out there.
I have a 65 Volvo in beautiful condition. It does not have a computer and when something goes down on it it has to be searched out.
What you need to do is to go to the local auto supply store and check out the repair manuals. That will give you a better understanding.

Ha, I think there's a bit more to it than that. You might be thinking that mechanics make an hourly wage of what you get charged for "labor" when you take your car in. They don't. Much of that goes to the shop (owner). I know a few mechanics and they are by no stretch of the imagination making a killing doing that.

Everyone has their own comfort level as to how much of their own repairs they feel capable of doing. I do a fair amount of work on my own cars ( I also own Haynes and Chiltons repair manuals for each of them). I also work on cars for friends. But if I have a project that I feel is out of my comfort level I get expert help. Much can be learned from books, true....but experience is the greatest teacher, and when I'm over my head I gladly pay to benefit from their knowledge.

First thing, They can charge so much because not every can build a motor and it run correctly.
Secondly, Mechanic's is not a very easy task to do it can be very tedious at times.
Thirdly, They have bills to just like every one else.
