It's a bit complicated to describe how to do it in words.
Why not try and find a piano teacher, or get someone who plays the piano to show you.
And which canon in D are you referring to?

Note: The people I know who have tried to play this version (including me) find it somewhat difficult, you may want to find an easier one.
