technically, australia is part of asia...but they simply can't accept that...they're not left with much choices when they're isolated on far east or extreme southwest of the globe but to ally themselves to US.

Geographically Australia is closer to Asia than the US/Europe -- but culturally Australia is a world away from Asia. It makes sense that Australia would align itself with a country like the USA that is powerful and is also very similar culturally.
I think it was a mistake for PM Howard to support the war in Iraq, but only in political terms. The country of Australia is really risking very little in terms of life and money on this war. Eventually both Australia and the USA are going to elect sane leadership, and the ties between the two countries will still be strong.
Honestly, I think it benefits both Australia and the USA for the two to be allies.

As an American, I am proud to have Australia as an ally. I feel very confident having Australia as a western gateway to Asia. Australia has been very smart and used their geography to its best advantage. They have positioned themselves to be on friendly relations with three superpowers (India, China, US). Well done Australia. If only the US could do as you have done.

Everyone needs friends! But friendship is a two way street. We are American allies, but they are not ours! Remember when we have had problems in the past ie. Timor, and the US said that it was none of their business.
Just watch what happens if Indonesia gets nasty, I doubt you will see them for dust.
We are important to the US government for as long as they have military bases are here, or they want our oil, which ever comes first.

You could argue both ways but in the end you have to make a decision. Having an ally as big as the US isn't such a bad thing, they don't always elect warmongers into office.

For those of you who have NO idea about Australia let me make it clear:
Australia is for lack of a better term the Southern Playa - we are friends with the Yankies and we are friends with the Asian nations.... At the moment we play with both regions AND make a heck of a lot of $$$ out of BOTH of them....

No we like having USA as our friend and ally our only mistake was voting for Honest John or as we like to call him George Bushs **** licker.Luckily they will both be gone soon and the respective governments will have to clean up the mess they leave behind.

How ought to it no longer expensive buddy? consequently the commonly used quote, "What doesn't kill us ... in person-friendly words makes us better!" I definitely have used that quote to get via many circumstances in my life and it really is a self-pleasant prophecy. If we believe blunders are meant to be discovered from then we can study from them and they're going to make us better. blunders are in person-friendly words a downward spiral if we enable them to be. we elect our attitude about each thing that takes position to us in life. we can use blunders as an EXCUSE for a downward spiral ... yet what a waste of ability and life! Who i'm immediately ... blunders and all ... are a effect of all that has occurred to me and how I definitely have chosen to administration it. i'm surely a better and larger powerful individual for permitting my blunders to coach me somewhat than permitting them to "personal" me. Peace to you ... ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
