Positive and negative stencils, which is which?

I would think that this is a "positive" stencil as it is the gun. If the piece of stencil that was removed were placed on the board and spray painted around, it would be a negative.Then it would be a shadow around the image, not the image itself.

That is the definition of positive and negative space...I think this is how it woud apply to stencils.
