If the turtle is a male it should have a small indentation on the bottom part of it's shell, the female has a more flat shell on the bottom.

The reason for this is so when the male mounts the female to mate his shell has to curve over the females shell.

You cannot tell for sure until they hit a mature size- about 4".

Then the males will have long foreclaws, an in-curved belly, and a long thin tail.

The females will have flat or out-curved bellies and short, wide tails.

I have a turtle! love them! my veterinarian told me that it has something to do with the pattern on the bottom part of their shell.. i'm not for sure though..
