Initially, they didn't respond at all, because they were to busy fighting on the western front. Eventually, they became involved in the 'North Russia Campaign' on the side of the 'White Russians', or tsarist supporters, against the Bolshevists and this campaign lasted fro 1918 until 1920. I guess it wasn't a response as much as it was a coincidence, but the U.S. joined right after. The Central Powers (current Germany) brought all of its forces from the eastern front to the western front (France).
