....there are any number of musicals that could easily be my favorite; depending on my mood of the day. Today the musical 1776 comes to mind. I love the way the characters are so cleanly fleshed out, the way the writers combined humor/history/romance and how it addresses the quests for freedom, humanity, war and a better world. We saw a brilliant production of the show at the UCLA Freud Theater/Playhouse shortly after 9/11 & it was clearly apparent that the more things change....the more they stay the same, politically. The music runs the gammit from lively to tender and everything in between. A terrific show!

Hmmmm.....good one...totally a toss up between Phantom of the Opera and Rent! Rent's got a great message that no matter what adversities are put in your way, that with the help of friends, love, and a kickin solo, you can overcome anything. But Phantom of the Opera is a classic love story and commentary on how superficial and damaging an unaccepting society can be. They've both got songs that stick with you for days, and they've both get great messages. One's just a bit more recent than the other.

West Side Story never gets old in terms of its themes and challenges and I would have to agree with the person who said 1776, it's fantastic. I would also have to say Assassins and Sweeney Todd.
