from http://crucial.com,it suggests to add 256MB/ 512MB to available empty slot but does that mean I cannot add 768MB or 1GB in the available empty slot?

crucial.com says my PC can handle 2GB memory but it suggests to have
existing 256GB +
256MB or 512MB.
But since my PC can handle upto 2GB can I have
1. 512MB in 2 slots OR
2. 256MB (existing) + 1GB in second
?

Best thing to do is to go to 'www.crucial.com" once there put in your systems info and see how much memory you can use. If your system can handle up to 1GB of more, it will tell you which type you need and will give you the opportunity to purchase some. More that likely you will have to get rid of the 256 stick you have and install 2 sticks of 512 MB in each slot. Hope this helps. Will.

As said before, the only way to get 1 GB is either to have 1 GB stick by itself, or to have 2 sticks of 512.
Your motherboard would have to support up to a gig in a single slot, if it does, this is the option I recommend, it means more room for upgrading later on. Getting one stick now (1GB), and one stick later (1GB), instead of two sticks now (512MB x 2), and two sticks later (1GB x 2). If you notice, you'll also have your recently bought two sticks of 512 ram not being used, which makes it a waste of money. In short, I recommend you just buy a gig stick of ram.
This effectively puts you over 1GB, since the 256MB stick is now 'extra'. But oh well. Your only other option is to get a 512MB stick, just one, but that won't push you over 1GB of ram, and it runs into the same upgrading problems I mentioned earlier.
In short, buy a gig stick of ram. And don't forget to put your biggest stick in the 'slot 1' on your motherboard.

Computermodder is so stupid. There is no such thing as 768 stick of ram. You would have to add either a 1gb stick or take the 256mb stick out and add 2 512mb sticks.

Mixing ram sticks is not a good idea! To upgrade you should either get two matched 512 meg sticks, or better still to allow for a possible future upgrade a single 1 Gig stick. Just be sure to check with your motherboard's maker if it will handle it, since many older models will not !

First check your motherboards manual and see what is its maximum capacity for its memory, then see what FSB it has, then take out your 256MB ram and replace it with 2 512MBs that has the same FSB as your board, well if it is SD-Ram it will only be PC100 or PC133, just take a look at your manual to see your boards capacity.....

If you have 1 empty slot you remove the current RAM and fill both slots with 512MB RAM

replace the 256mb with 1gb or use two 512mb. compare prices vs
in case of malfunction, your better off with a working one 512 than a dead 1gb

first remove your 256 MB SD RAM first and put in 2 nos of 512 MB RAM or 1 no of 1GB RAM. first check it your pc support to 1GB. i think your PC is supported to 512 MB only. that time use your old 256 MB SD RAM and buy one more buy in 256 MB SD RAM with same mhz speed. that is very important. then use it.

dont even bother
get a ddr moby, ddr is 1/2 the price of sd anyway
chances are a sd moby wont take 512 or 1gig sticks anyway.
dump it.

What you need to find out first is how much memory can go in your Motherboard that it can use! Once you know just how much that is, then divide that by two and that's how much memory you can install that it can use...Understand...and they have to be and EXACT match in size and type to work correctly together!!!
